December 16, 2014 | DOSEO platform inaugurated

The DOSEO radiotherapy and medical imaging technology platform was inaugurated on December 16, 2014. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was officiated by French Secretary of State for Research and Higher Education Geneviève Fioraso and CEA Chief Administrator Bernard Bigot and was attended by National Cancer Institute (INCA) President Dr. Agnès Buzyn and National Metrology and Testing Laboratory (LNE) Director Jean-Luc Laurent.

Located on the future Paris-Saclay University campus and founded by the CEA, LNE, and INCA, Doseo will leverage partnerships with manufacturers, scientists, and clinicians to optimize and test new radiotherapy and medical imaging technologies while reducing the risks to patients and practitioners. Cancer treatment will be one of the main areas that stands to benefit from Doseo’s research.

The Doseo platform, unlike any other facility in Europe, offers an innovation-driven collaborative R&D and training environment open to all partners, whether they are from industry, academia, or medicine. The resources available include a full battery of radiotherapy and medical imaging equipment such as accelerators, a brachytherapy unit, measuring instruments, a scanner, and an HPC cluster, plus the know-how required to get the most out of these resources.

Inauguration Plateforme DOSEODoseo is part of the second phase (2009-2013) of the French government’s cancer policy and is certified by the Medicen Paris Région cluster. The platform is financed by the CEA, INCA, LNE, the Essonne General Council, the Île-de-France Regional Council, the ERDF, the Paris-Saclay University Campus Plan, and the French Single Interministerial Fund (funds administered by the French Directorate General for Enterprise).

October 18, 2014 | Ermes introduces new radiation-resistant video camera

Ermes, which runs a joint lab with CEA LIST, has released its new Viza 50 video camera. The radiation-hardened camera can tolerate doses of 50 gKy, offering remote operators invaluable assistance with inspection and maintenance tasks in radioactive environments.

201411 01The Viza 50 will round out Ermes’ current catalog of hardened cameras.

The analog Viza 50 is two to three times smaller and lighter than the current state of the art. It delivers PAL and NTSC signals that can be displayed directly by traditional video monitors. The camera is constructed in two modules—one on the operator side and the other in the radioactive environment.

CEA LIST provided know-how—technology bricks proven to withstand accumulated doses of ionizing radiation—crucial for the development of the second module. One of CEA LIST’s notable enhancements was to the electronic architecture regeneration system.

Ermes intends to target several nuclear-industry applications with the Viza 50, from accident response and decommissioning through to plant process monitoring and control. The company has already generated sales leads in Europe, Asia, and the United States.

September 10, 2014 | 97,000 multimedia documents filed in under 2 minutes

The Periplus project consortium used new partitioning technologies to file 97,000 documents containing text, images, and video by theme at speeds of 200 items per second. CEA LIST is coordinator of the Periplus research project, which is funded by the French National Research Agency.

201411 05What makes this new filing method different from existing solutions is that it does not discriminate between different media and forms, whether an item is a Tweet, a patent, or a scientific paper, for instance. The solutions currently available can only handle one type of media or handle different media, but separately. Another benefit of the new method is the capacity to configure the best possible compromise between processing time and quality to meet the user’s particular needs.

This successful demonstration led to the implementation of several experimental prototypes for testing by manufacturing companies, where the “clustering” technology could be used to improve business intelligence and information-search capabilities.

In addition, semantic analysis can be applied to images and videos to create multi-mode summaries of sets of documents and to link the visual and text-based representations of a given concept.

July 21, 2014 | CEA LIST software to help build the future European rail network

201411 06The EU openETCS project consortium, which includes Deutsche Bahn, Siemens, Mitsubishi, and others, has evaluated and validated two CEA LIST software packages for the development of the future European Train Control System, which will facilitate interoperability between today’s highly-fragmented national rail networks.

The first tool approved is the open-source Papyrusmodelling software. It is used to describe the requirements of the ETCS and generate a SysML model used to assess the compatibility of various design and architecture choices with the Cenelec 50128 standard for critical rail systems development.

And, once the ETCS development process has been completed, another CEA LIST tool, the Frama-C C-language program analysis software, will be used to provide formal proof that the code aligns with specifications, particularly in terms of safety and security.

The successful evaluations have already earned CEA LIST a slot on the EU H2020 project development team. This new project will extend the work carried out under openETCS. Papyrus and Frama-C have also garnered interest from Mitsubishi, which found out about the software thanks to openETCS.

Embedded Engineering Learning Platform (E2LP) teaches the next generation of engineers

The E2LP is designed to give university students a multi-modal interface covering the complete process for embedded systems learning. It aims to make the learning process more attractive by using visualization and haptics technologies to illustrate the physics concepts implemented on electronic cards.

E2LP partners have completed their first prototype and presented it in research papers and presentations. The prototype brings together several innovations, including:

Task lamp with touchscreen

  • A touchscreen mounted on an articulated arm that localizes the camera
  • An association of robust sensors and accurate augmented reality algorithms
  • A haptic pen (using vibration and thermal feedback) localized in 3D
